J.K. Rowlings is known around the world for her groundbreaking work in the Harry Potter series. Now, she has released a new series which could rival the first in popularity. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them not only has the best balance of comedy, romance, and action I have ever seen in a movie but it also full of loveable creatures that you will want from the moment you see them.
Fantastic Beasts is placed in the United States in the early 1900’s. The sets and costumes are on point. You will feel like you have found your own pensieve. The computer graphics are so detailed and perfect that you would think that you are walking down a real street in New York. The costumes are a blend of historical accuracy and magic imagination. They also match each character’s personality in a way that adds to the realness of each scene.
One of the things that make the movie so great is that the main characters are relatable. Newt is an awkward person who finds it easier to interact with creatures than with other people. Porpentina, Tina, is a hard working witch just trying to make a name for herself in the ministry. These two are joined on their mission by a No-Maj (American for Muggle) Jacob who wants nothing more than to open a bakery. Tina’s sister rounds out the group with a special set of skills that helps the team get out of some sticky situations. The odd mixture of personalities makes for some side-splitting laughs to tear jerkers with everything in between.
The “Fantastic Four” are tasked with the job of finding the creatures that have escaped from Newts case when it is accidentally opened. The escapees make some unintentional mayhem in New York and cause some damage to the city and some egos along the way. I ca say with certainty that you will want at least one, if not all, of the creatures by the time the movie is over.
This movie will have you on your seats until the very end. It has so many twists and turns packed into 2 hours and 15 minutes that it could make you go crazy with excitement. The story also has an underlying question of who is Grindlewald and where is he hiding? Can you guess who Grindelwald is before his true identity is revealed? Or were you too fooled by his disguise?
