One of our favorite success stories is that of our very own Zetterholm. He retired sound to us in May 2014 after a successful career on the racetrack, which included a win in the Patysprospect Stakes at Aqueduct and fourth-place finishes in the 2012 Preakness and Dwyer Stakes.
Zetterholm immediately endeared himself to us with his exaggerated personality. He is easily the most charismatic horse ever to enter Changing Leads. “Z” is the friendliest, the nosiest, the loudest, the goofiest, and the greediest (just ask our official Peppermint Lady!). He is also super-flashy and mighty handsome. But, it is his intelligence, fearlessness, and eagerness to please that has led him to excel in his off-track career.
Zetterholm epitomizes the versatility of Thoroughbreds. At his very first show, the 2015 Louisiana Fall Classic, he was the champion of the 2’3” open hunter division—quite an accomplishment for a first-timer! Moving to the jumper ring the following summer, he won the .80 meter TIP class at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers in dramatic fashion, proving best in a jump-off as a major storm rolled in. This spring he won a combined test and a schooling horse trial in South Carolina, adding eventing to his resume. It seems there is nothing that Z can’t do!
Now, Z is heading back to the jumper ring. At 8 years young, he still has many years of competition ahead of him. And, like any proud parent, we will celebrate each and every success. Although we occasionally lease our gregarious guy so that others may share in the sheer entertainment that is Z, we always look forward to him coming back home to Changing Leads.
